Responsive privacy for safer digital presence

Visibility shouldn't cause your team harm.

Safety shouldn't mean disappearing.

What is Responsive Privacy

Responsive Privacy is a framework and a set of tools that enable organizations to evaluate and implement their current privacy needs, allowing them to rapidly respond to acute threats to their team and community, instead of choosing between getting seen and being protected. Responsive Privacy provides a model that allows teams to swing between the two modes as appropriate.

  • Fast activation

Protection that works in minutes, not days

  • Flexible visibility

Show what matters, without retracting everything

  • Reversible changes

    Restore visibility when risk subsides

  • Guided decisions

Clear pathways for assessing risk and taking action

  • Collaborative control

Shared decision-making between staff and organizations

Why Responsive Privacy

Civil society and non-profit organizations are facing a growing tension between visibility and privacy. To build trust, secure funding, and demonstrate impact, they need to be visible. They need to show who they are, who they work with, and the people behind their work. But that same visibility can expose staff, especially those from vulnerable communities, to harassment, doxxing, and escalating real-world threats.

How Responsive Privacy Works

This project aims to introduce the concept of Responsive Privacy, alongside some concrete implementations. Most information remains visible by default, supporting the openness that organizations rely on. But when there's an emergency, protection can be activated quickly, without permanent loss, and in a way that reflects the needs of both individual and organizational realities.

We're rethinking how digital systems support the people behind public work.

Our Research & Findings

Superbloom and Draftlab conducted a recent methods research study combining service and user research, and a literature review of the challenges they face. This approach allowed us to capture both broad patterns across the sector, and deep insights into individual experiences on an individual and organizational level.

Help Shape The Future of Responsive Privacy

We're now looking to collaborate with organizations, practitioners, and funders working in this space. Let us know if you're working on these issues, helping to fund them, or shaping how they're implemented.
